Tomorrow I have an important test. I can’t speak of it until it’s over because I don’t want to jinx it, but I will say that I am feeling quite overwhelmed at the moment (I’ve been at it for hours!) So this post is very much an excuse for a brief study break, though admittedly a post on Whitby is also long overdue too…

Well, it was my 17th WGW, which is a lot less than many of my friends, but I like to think that it’s still quite hardcore ;) I really feel all those years though – mostly in my familiarity with the town and the people, but also in my laid-back attitude to it all. When I first started going I used to push to do as much as I could, but now I find myself to be very relaxed about everything. Yes, you heard that right - I have become old and boring ;) Yet despite a lack of rushing I nonetheless had one of the best WGWs I’ve ever had, and I absolutely attribute it to my ‘settled’ state. There were excellent bands, outfits and food/drink, but the highlight for me was getting drunk with some close friends up in the abbey in the small hours of the morning. It just goes to prove that it really doesn’t take a big dress or even good music to make a Whitby special – just the company of some truly wonderful people (and maybe a little brandy ;)

At this point you would probably expect pictures of said Whitby shenanigans, but unfortunately I don’t have a working camera at the moment so in lieu I’m posting a few more images from my trip up to Yorkshire a few weeks ago. The photographer lives just a short drive away from the elf’s parents’ house, but I didn’t know this until I was already up – we started communicating quite randomly and somehow managed to arrange a shoot within a few hours. So it was all very sudden and, unusually for me, I didn’t have a specific theme or story to shoot. However, considering how close we were to each other it would have been a shame not to do something, so we came up with a quick plan. He very much wanted to get some beauty shots (which I’m sure everyone knows are close-ups of a model’s face), and while the idea always frightens me I agreed on condition that I could get some shots for some of the beautiful clothing that [info]wyte_phantom has very kindly made for me. I’m posting a couple from both ‘his set’ and ‘mine’ because they make for an interesting combination, though of course I remain dubious about extreme close-ups… it’s just damn alarming having a camera that close to your face!

Can anyone offer a loving home to a microphone stand (minus the microphone)? Sadly it's become homeless due to changes in living arrangements at its current home.

There will be more homeless items to follow in the near future so watch this space.

Friday was a right off but I eventually climbed out of bed to spent the day in Oxford and see the Steampunk Exhibition on Saturday, little group of us met up there , all organise by [info]vampyresheep . It was lovely, some great details pieces, fab to see [info]lost_in_avebury and [info]brute_force amazing artworks displayed in a museum...and so perfectly fitting in the science museum…had a lovely wander
around, getting lot of inspirations…couldn’t quite enjoy Oxford fully in the wind and the rain, so shopping and museums were replaced by
cosy warm pub and grogs…ending the day in some fabulous Moroccan tapas restaurant.
By the time we return to London , I was just too sleepy to face Reptile…shame as I so wanted to return…back to bed …pretty much
until Sunday evening…

From MetalStorm:

"Cesare "Fratello Metallo" Bonizzi (born 1946), a monk from the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin who has been performing in recent years as a heavy metal singer, has decided to retire. Fratello Metallo ("Brother Metal"), which is also the name of his band, felt that being in a heavy metal band has made him a celebrity and taken him down the Devil's path. The Devil, he says, has turned him away from his fellow monks and managers, so he had "to kill him." However, Bonizzi asserts that he will maintain his interest in heavy metal.

Since 1990 he has released numerous albums in various styles from new age to rock. After seeing Metallica in concert, however, his passion turned to heavy metal. "Metal is the most energetic, vital, deep and true musical language that I know," says Fratello Metallo. In 2008 he released a heavy metal album under the title Misteri. He cites Megadeth and Metallica as major inspirations on his transformation to metal. His band was the opening act at 2008's Gods of Metal, Italy's largest heavy metal festival.

Tsk, indoctrination... I thought this guy was awesome, exactly because he went into the stuff "the Church" generally stands for, but not really it seems.. Weak.

Good Morning children. Are we sitting comfortably? Good then I'll begin.

I had a mostly quiet weekend, rumbling around the strange borderland of lazy and productive. I played a lot of WoW but also found myself on a train into town at 10:40 on Saturday morning. To buy new work shoes. Success. They're *very* tedious. I also ended up buying Fuzzy a hoodie as he only appears to own t-shirts so has been getting quite cold around the house (despite all the fur). Bumped into Lisa and Ian in Morrisons so the journey home was super taxi good.

When I got home I cleaned the bathroom shelf. This was no small task! it was very ick and knee deep in half empty toothpaste containers. I also allowed a Mr Ainsley Harriot to assist me in cooking some oriental noodly dish that was tasty - mmmm - both sweet and spicy :D (the Ainsley cooking kits are £2.50 and currently on buy one get one free - good value imho)

Later on Red and Beckie came round and we drank wine, vodka and cider (including a pre-midnight co-op dash for more boozes) it was probably messy. we watched Moulin Rouge (cos Beckie remembered hating it but wasn't sure why seeing as all things considered it has 'beckie friendly' written on it in big letters and then conceded that she really did like it upon a second viewing and must have just watched it with someone who hated it last time thus soaking up the hate from them) then we watched all the songs from cabaret (cos my copy on dvd has that as an easy option - diddly diddly dee!) and then I think beckie crashed out and me and Red slept through most of Chicago - looks fascinating so I shall have to watch that properly.

Hangover of doom on Sunday. Fed Red then locked myself in my cave to level my DeathKnight for a bit :)

One thing I did enjoy on Saturday afternoon was listening to music whilst playing WoW (I don't get to if I'm playing with D as it gets in the way of the SKYPE making it hard to hear what people are saying) I went through the folk music on my hard drive and remembered my love of it especially this song:

the Dalesman's Litany )

Later, this week should bring fondue and games with Johnny, Tim and Jen. Woo! :D nom.

I would be grateful for any help in the space of a kitchen subject in Medieval England - especially from anthropological perspective of studies.

The sky is definately grey... and wet.. and cold..

A day beginning with the discovery that one of your car headlights has blown, followed by being over 1 hour late for work due to being sat in a traffic jam on the A1 in London for much of that time.. the omens do not look good.

Now, to try and fix Friday's code you've just been told has broken everything...

Shaping up to be an excellent day ;)

Anyone interested in renting/short let of their spare room for 4 months… I have 2 friends (girls) coming over from Australia from December-March and looking for a cheap accomodation. I can vouch for them ( I used to live with one of them) they usually stay in my living room but 4 months a bit too long…so I am asking around friends who might be interested in renting/letting space for a little while……so I can put them in contact

Please could anyone point me to good primary or secondary sources about life in 12-13th-century Paris (in French, English, or German accessible via Cambridge University Library, bookshops, or internet)? Needn't be confined to the period mentioned, but that's my main focus of interest.

I'm a rusty medieval lit scholar with very limited knowledge of history. I'm really looking for anything from a basic 'Medieval Paris for Dummies' to hard academic or primary texts. I'm especially interested in:

  • religious and educational institutions
  • everyday life.
Thanks in advance.

The plan for my second full day in Prague was simple, and achievable: take photos during the day, go on the Ghost Tour at night, stay out past 10pm, have a beer.

Hopefully my photos are capturing Prague in a way that does it justice, while still having some magic Chisel-dust evident.
My legs have the traditional, "OMFG, what are you doing to us?" thing going on today.

I've barely scratched Prague's surface and I don't know when the rain will finally strike, so, sorry legs - more of the same today.

I wasn't entirely sure what to expect from the ghost tour; maybe some historical stories and dark, creepy locations.
I don't know how much truth was in the stories, but they mostly felt like setups for various "shocks" from a guy in various appalling fancy dress outfits.

I have no idea how they managed to scare the rest if the group. Still, it was so poor I'm still laughing about it all now
It was entertaining, but not very ghostly.

I have a feeling that the yellow meeting umbrella doubled as a signal from the guide to her accomplice; I should have asked but this way I come away from the tour with some sense of mystery.

After the tour I managed to get a drink at my new, regular, coffee shop before the 10pm shutdown.

I wandered off and found a fairly quiet square with fountain and benches to sit and enjoy the night atmosphere.
I was entertained for some time by Hooker Watch, which I twittered as it took place.

When I'm back on a normal PC, not my phone, I might post separately about it.

After I finally started to feel the cold I went off and had a single beer, before returning to the hotel.

Hi everyone,

So, I've been looking for an article I read about 6 years ago for the past two hours and have come up with nothing. I don't remember the title or the author(s?), but what I remember was that it started out comparing events from Japan, the Middle East, and France (I think it was France, at least) from one particular year in--I think, not entirely sure--the eight century. I think the main point of the article was a call to medievalists to consider other world events in the study of medieval history. It's a relatively recent article--published in the last 10-15 years. It was really interesting but it's driving me crazy that I can't seem to find it anywhere. I seem to remember that it was published in a reputable journal.

Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks.
